goblin

Small, humanoid creatures with gangly limbs, protruding ears and bulging eyes, goblins dwell mostly underground in large, incestuous tribes and families, often numbering in the hundreds or thousands, a long removed relative of the far more dangerous orcs. Perhaps only outnumbered by kobolds in the Underdark, goblins are slightly more intelligent, even sometimes trading with civilized people and learning other languages. Goblins are expert tunnellers, scraping out passages with their rock-hard nails over generations, and thus can be found in the most unlikely of places. Although dangerous in large numbers, most civilized races consider them pests at best, and too disorganized and tribal to mount any serious threat to nations above ground.
